Honors Thesis Advisors and Readers

In both the first and second semesters of their senior year, honors candidates must register for an AMST 1970 or ETHN 1910 directed by their Thesis Advisor.

In addition to a Thesis Advisor, all theses must have a Reader. By the end of their seventh semester, honors candidates must submit to their concentration advisor the name of a Brown faculty member or graduate student who has agreed to serve as Reader.

The respective responsibilities of the Thesis Advisor and Thesis Reader are outlined below.

The job of the Thesis Advisor includes:

  • Establishing work schedules with advisees and helping set deadlines for completed work
  • Meeting with advisee on regular basis
  • Helping plan and organize research
  • Reading research reports and drafts of chapters
  • Submitting a progress report at the end of Semester I to the Concentration Advisor.
  • Approving final version of the thesis
  • Submitting written reports summarizing advisor and reader's assessment of the thesis at the end of Semester II to the Concentration Advisor.

Thesis Readers should:

  • Establish their role after consultation with the advisor and advisee
  • May discuss research and read drafts of chapters
  • Read and approve finished version of the thesis and discuss with advisor its strengths and weaknesses.
